What should I wear for my photography session?
This question comes up constantly and for good reason, it can be really hard coordinating everyone and trying to decide what outfits are going to work best for the pictures that you want. To help take the stress and guesswork out of styling for your session here are my top five tips to create the look that you want for your pictures:
Tip 1: Keep it simple.
Pick a neutral color palette and dress everyone in shades of these colors (think tans, creams, earthy greens, khakis, blues). Keeping everyone in the same color family and clothing simple, makes things easy and puts the focus on you as the subjects, instead of clashing or competing clothing. It also creates a look that is timeless and sophisticated.
Tip 2: Only one person in a pattern at a time.
Pick an outfit for one member of the family that has a pattern (florals, chunky plaid, etc) and then pick colors out of that garment to match everyone else too. Keep those outfits solid and simple and your look will be cohesive and classic.
Tip 3: Think about your vibe
Are you wanting a boho look, casual & comfortable, black tie attire, bright and bold, monochromatic, etc. If you know the overall style you are going for, this will also help give you some direction on the type of clothing to choose and then you can pick out the colors.
Tip 4: Consider your location.
If you are taking pictures outdoors and there’s lots of green in your surroundings, colors that will make you as the subject pop are purple, pink, red, orange, yellow (think color theory here and opposites on the color wheel). If you want less pop and more blend, then think tans, browns, creams, blues. If in studio, bold color choices will add pop, muted nuetrals will create a simplistic vibe (and don’t confuse simple with boring! Simple usually leads to classic and sophisticated)
Tip 5: Choose outfits that are comfortable and make you feel confident.
People often say how anxious, awkward and self-conscious they feel when they step in front of the camera. Making sure that your outfits fit well and help you feel confident will only impact your session in a positive way. The last thing you want is to constantly be adjusting your clothing, worrying about how it looks or wishing you had chosen something else.
